“No one wants to work for a raggedy company.” – Fatima Dainkeh, Inclusion Geeks Director of Training. In an era where diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging have become pivotal in every industry, the tech sector faces challenges in achieving gender parity. Here at Inclusion Geeks, we’re actively working to change this narrative. As part of our commitment to empowering women+ in tech, we’ve launched our online job board to bridge the connections between our trusted corporate partners and our community of fabulous women+ in and around tech.

Last week we celebrated the 10th anniversary of our very first event in Boston. At the time, we were called Boston Girl Geek Dinners, the local chapter of an organization started in London, whose goal was to create a space for women in tech through fun events. We ran it as a one-off event. Fun fact, this is how Rachel and Felicia first met– Rachel had started the chapter a few years prior, and Felicia worked for the company sponsor VMware, and was tasked with acting as point person for the night.

If you find yourself working in a “boys’ club,” it can be challenging to know how to succeed. So here are some tips for surviving and thriving in this type of environment.

During a recent webinar (Women+ at Work: Creating a Gender-Inclusive Workplace – you should totes check it out), a participant asked a question that I’ve been thinking about since I hit the “end meeting for all” Zoom button: How can we support other women+ in the workplace? Initially, I thought, “that’s easy! Just show up for the women+ that you work with!” But TBH, it’s not that simple. For starters, the gender pay gap is still a thing and hasn’t changed much in nearly 20 years.

Recently, I was at a fast-food-restaurant-that-shall-remain-nameless because, duh, coin. I am a woman of simple habits and order quite literally the same thing every time. So I settle in to do some good old-fashioned scrolling on the apps (and maybe update my dating profile(s)) when my order arrives. As I begin to enjoy my food, I realize that my half-sweet/half-unsweet tea with no ice is overflowing with ice. I politely ask the person who dropped it off if they could fix it, and they politely obliged. A few moments later, here they come with my beverage, and guess what?

We didn’t even get all the way through Christmas before the stores reminded us that Valentine’s Day was next up on the holiday calendar. The shelves were awash in a sea of pink and red, overflowing with heart-shaped boxes of chocolate and adorable stuffies before Santa could pack up his sleigh for the season. For some, this serves as a reminder that the day is fast approaching and you should be figuring out what your gift-giving situation looks like. For others, it’s a nagging echo of the absence of a romantic partner.

As if the past three years weren’t enough with a whole (ongoing) pandemic, continued reminders of racial injustice and inequities, an insurrection, and the downfall of Twitter (to name a few – there’s sooooooo much more), 2023 is determined to add to the foolery with an impending recession. And with a recession comes the unfortunate reality of layoffs. The internet is full of resources and support for what you should do after a layoff (things like brushing up your resume, creating a job-search schedule, and networking).

This Giving Tuesday, we’re celebrating the amazing nonprofits that are working hard to make a difference in our communities. Every day, these organizations work tirelessly to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, provide essential services, and support vulnerable populations. This Giving Tuesday, we encourage you to give back to the organizations that mean the most to you! There are many different ways to show your support, and we’ve highlighted a few of our favorite options below. Please note that there are incredible local nonprofits as well that are impactful in your community.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and for many, there will be a lot of discussion about how to mark this holiday. For the past few years, we’ve shared some resources and thoughts on why we should rethink Thanksgiving. This year, we have another opportunity to do just that: rethink what, how, and why we choose to celebrate this holiday. For many people, Thanksgiving 2021 was the first time that we were able to gather with family members, thanks to the availability of a COVID vaccine.

In case you haven’t noticed, the holiday season is in full swing! Halloween wasn’t even fully over before turkeys and stockings rushed into spaces that moments ago housed skulls and cauldrons. And as we near the “traditional” holidays, we understand that not everyone has the same religious observances, if any at all. This can make the upcoming months tricky as companies are apt to throw holiday parties that are inclusive of some folks, but not all.

Hybrid work life has arrived, and with it, a slew of challenges. There’s much to navigate, from childcare to issues transitioning back into in-person conversations with colleagues, managers, and clients. And let’s not forget the biases and microaggressions that can rear their ugly heads when back IRL. Here are some tips for navigating the hybrid work life. When you’re remote: When you’re in the office: Work, as we have historically known it, has forever changed, and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
